Abstract

Drawing upon empirical research from global multinational corporations comes a two-part reference book on how to develop resilient HR initiatives for building inclusive and accessible workplaces. Including a user-friendly training manual, this book equips you with a practical resource grounded in theory. The first part systematically reviews the existing literature to identify the gaps in current practices and discusses the results of the empirical research. Building on this, the second part reveals the training manual for guiding business leaders, academicians, practitioners, and students. By positioning business practices alongside cases, you can see the benefits and drawbacks of current HR initiatives. From race and religion, to LGBTQ, gender diversity and disability, the research covers a broad spectrum of issues facing modern workplaces and provides a fresh perspective on how to improve existing HR practices. Based on research from South Asia, this work provides hypothetical cases, action-oriented role plays, and creative exercises to reflect upon how we might address the global challenges of inclusion and accessibility.

Abstract

This is the first book to apply the concept of ‘contents tourism’ in a global context and to establish an international and interdisciplinary framework for contents tourism research. The term ‘contents tourism’ gained official recognition in Japan when it was defined by the Japanese government in 2005, and it has been characterised as ‘travel behaviour motivated fully or partially by narratives, characters, locations, and other creative elements of popular culture forms including film, television dramas, manga, anime, novels and computer games’. The book builds on previous research from Japan and explores three main themes of contents tourism: ‘the Contentsization of Literary Worlds’, ‘Tourist Behaviours at “Sacred Sites” of Contents Tourism’ and ‘Contents Tourism as Pilgrimage’ and draws together these key themes to propose a set of policy implications for achieving successful and sustainable contents tourism in the 21st century.

Abstract

"Conflicts happen, and the workplace can be a breeding ground for negative conflicts. Consider that organizational culture consists of shared values, beliefs, assumptions, perceptions, and norms. Add to that the fact that organizations are multifaceted associations of individuals, departments, and divisions, and each is competing for scarce resources. Stir in a little power imbalance and organizational political posturing. Then, add the fact that today's managers are faced with diversity and cultural issues ranging from race and gender to individual ethnicity, principles, and philosophies, about which we are more vocal. Shake all that together and you have a workplace that is bubbling over with conflicted people and situations. However, when productively managed, conflicts can be the lifeblood of an organization. Consider that music is not a single note. Rather, it is the silence between the notes that make beautiful music. Conflict is the silence between the notes. Unfortunately, conflict has a bad reputation, and it is often labeled as disagreement, fighting, or arguing that leads to stress, retaliation, and resentment. Even though managers spend between 40% and 60% of their days dealing with conflicts, many have not learned what causes conflicts or how to productively manage them, so they avoid or force outcomes. As a result, discord abounds and results in fractured relationships, loss of productivity, and even lawsuits. Learning to fine tune the conflicts will help managers orchestrate a more harmonious workplace"--

Abstract

his book is the first practical, hands-on guide that shows how leaders can build psychological safety in their organizations, creating an environment where employees feel included, fully engaged, and encouraged to contribute their best efforts and ideas. Perhaps the leader's most challenging task is to increase intellectual friction while decreasing social friction. When this doesn't happen and it becomes emotionally expensive to say what you truly think and feel, that lack of psychological safety triggers the self-censoring instinct, shuts down learning, and blocks collaboration and creativity. Timothy R. Clark, a former CEO, Oxford-trained social scientist, and organizational consultant, provides a research-based framework to help leaders transform their organizations into sanctuaries of inclusion and incubators of innovation. When leaders cultivate psychological safety, teams and organizations progress through four successive stages. Bridging Differences for Better Mentoringhoughtful and pragmatic guide demonstrates that if you banish fear, install true performance-based accountability, and create a nurturing environment that allows people to be vulnerable as they learn and grow, they will perform beyond your expectations.

Abstract

Warren Buffett and his company, Berkshire Hathaway, are legendary for their distinctive investing approach. Yet many equally unconventional but less well known aspects of Berkshire's managerial practices and organizational structure are rich with lessons for those seeking to follow in Buffett's footsteps. Margin of Trust is the first book to distill Buffett's approach to management and corporate life. It provides a definitive analysis of the tenets of the Berkshire system, its costs and benefits, and how it can be adapted for other organizations.Lawrence A. Cunningham and Stephanie Cuba develop a new account of how Berkshire Hathaway works, showing that the key to its success is trust. Profiling partnership practices and business methods, they contend that Berkshire's distinguishing feature is a culture in which autonomy and decentralization are core management principles. Cunningham and Cuba provide instructive examples of how this model has been successfully adapted by other companies that share a faith in trust as an organizing principle. They also offer candid commentary on the risks of a trust-based approach and how to mitigate them. Margin of Trust features illuminating analysis of Buffett's take on the role trust plays in business agreements, what Buffett looks for in great corporate boards, and what lies ahead for Berkshire after its iconic leader leaves the scene.

Abstract

Infant mortality among Hindus is higher than among Muslims in India, and religious differences in sanitation practices have been cited as a contributing factor. To explore whether religion itself is associated with differences in sanitation practices, this study compares sanitation practices of Hindus and Muslims living in the same locations using three nationally-representative data sets from India. Across all three data sets, the unconditional religion-specific gap in latrine ownership and latrine use declines by approximately two-thirds when conditioning on location characteristics or including location fixed effects. Further, the estimates do not show evidence of religion-specific differences in other sanitation practices, such as handwashing or observed fecal material near homes. Household sanitation practices vary substantially across areas of India, but religion itself has less direct influence when considering differences between Hindus and Muslims within the same location.

Abstract

The authors present a practical set of guidelines for people wishing to communicate professionally in Mexico or with Mexicans, following the model of the similar books by Kelm and Victor on Brazil and Japan of presenting on key cultural concepts. Good communication requires more than knowing the language. Olivia Hernandez-Pozas, Orlando Kelm, and David Victor, seasoned cross-cultural trainers for businesspeople, provide a guide through Victor's LESCANT model (Language, Environment, Social Organization, Context, Authority, Nonverbal, and Time). Each chapter addresses one of these topics and demonstrates how to evaluate the differences between Mexico and others in North America, presenting examples to help people avoid common communication mistakes. The book is generously peppered with photographs to provide visual examples. The authors complete the book with a case study chapter on a business interaction between Mexican and other North Americans (NAs). They then gathered comments from various NA professionals working in Mexico and Mexicans working with US professionals about the interactions in the case, providing helpful observations about the situation. The book straddles some language and communication topics, international relations, and reaches into the business community.
